James began his studies in Business Administration at the University of Bath before going on to train at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, graduating with a distinction in MSc Ethnobotany. After an introductory guest-presenting role on 'Gardeners’ World', James launched his broadcasting career as the presenter of Grow Your Own Drugs, which soon became the highest-rated gardening series on UK television. James Wong's Homegrown Revolution
James Wong's official speaking topics are listed below:
Can We Predict Food Trends?
Food trend forecasting is now a multimillion-dollar industry. From insect protein to algae bread, bold predictions ripple through headlines, TV shows, and boardrooms — promising a clearer picture of what’s coming next. But what if most food forecasting is built on far shakier ground than we admit?
In a world shaped by cultural whiplash, political shocks, and human contradiction, this talk challenges the idea that the future of food can be reliably mapped at all. Botanist James Wong digs into why food futures so often surprise us, using social science and cultural insight to reveal what really drives what we eat — not just innovation and markets, but identity, emotion, fear, and desire.
The session ends by taking a deliberate risk: offering speculative glimpses of what might be on our plates in 2050. Not predictions, but provocations — designed to unsettle assumptions, stretch imaginations, and change how we think about preparing for the future of food.
Food, Fiction and the Fight for Trust
We live in a golden age of food advice — and a golden age of food nonsense. From demonised ingredients and miracle superfoods to viral detoxes and nutrition conspiracies, misinformation now spreads faster than evidence ever could.
In a world of algorithms, influencers, and deepening distrust, this talk explores how and why food and nutrition myths take hold, and what they reveal about fear, identity, power, and who we choose to believe. Botanist James Wong unpacks the psychology and culture behind modern food misinformation, showing why facts alone are rarely enough to change minds.
More importantly, the session challenges organisations to rethink how they communicate science. Moving beyond corrections and claims, it offers practical, provocative insights into how brands and institutions can speak about science in ways that feel human, relevant, and trustworthy — and how to earn credibility in an age where “fake news” often sounds better than the truth.
