After studying English on a scholarship at Cambridge University, Ian was made an Honorary Fellow of the College. During his studies, he was a member of the Marlowe Society, where he appeared in 23 plays over the course of 3 years, and gave legendary performances as Justice Shallow in Henry IV, in 1959. Ian started his professional career in 1961 at the Belgrade Theatre, as a member of their highly regarded repertory company. After gaining a taste for the stage, he proceeded to make his first West End appearance in 1965. In 1969, he was invited to join the Prospect Theatre Company to play the lead role in Shakespeare’s Richard II and Marlowe’s Edward II.
Ian was knighted in 1991 for his work within the performing arts, appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1979 and, most recently, was made a Companion of Honour for services to drama and equality in 2008. He has been openly gay since 1988, and continues to champion for LGBT+ rights.
