Highly regarded in the world of education and sustainability, Professor Ian Guymer is an esteemed civil engineering professor and after-dinner speaker. Upon graduating with a degree in Civil Engineering from Loughborough University of Technology in 1981, Ian then completed his PhD from the University of Birmingham in 1985. With such a firm foundation of understanding, it is no surprise that Ian is greatly respected in his field.
As a researcher, Ian specialises in the mixing and transport of pollutants in areas of water, including coastal and estuarine areas, urban drainage, rivers. Most recently, he has focused his study on pipe distribution systems. Through carrying out field and laboratory studies, he established engineering application procedures for quantifying civil engineering hydraulic processes. As a speaker, Ian can discuss his findings in length, in an eloquent and understandable manner. He explores the nature of urban drainage by explaining the process of sewer overflow and quantifying dispersion, through methods including manhole covers in ecological locations like ponds and river systems.
As an expert in water pollution, Ian has completed a number of research studies on the Coastal Research Facility, the UK national hydraulic facilities and the Flood Channel. Through investment from EPSRC, NERC, and the EU, he has improved the efficiency and quality of water processes in the United Kingdom. As a Member of the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management and a Chartered Engineered, he is highly regarded amongst his peers.
Ian's first experience of academia was at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, before moving to lecture at the University of Sheffield. Whilst working at the university, he worked with Professor Adrian Saul to create the postgraduate Water MSc course. Further on in his career, Ian became a Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Warwick in 2005, before returning to the University of Sheffield in 2018. Ian's experience of not just civil engineering and water contamination, but also presenting in front of a lecture hall of students, makes him a confident and knowledgeable sustainability speaker.
