Dr Hannah Ritchie is a data scientist, writer and author, currently serving as Deputy Editor at Our World in Data and Senior Researcher in the Programme for Global Development at the University of Oxford. Passionate about sustainability, climate change, biodiversity and public health, Hannah’s valuable insights and powerful takes are perfect for a range of audiences.
During the completion of her BSc in Environmental Geoscience at the University of Edinburgh, Hannah served as a Research Scientist with the UK Biochar Research Centre and the University of Strathclyde. Following the undertaking of her Master’s degree in Carbon Management, Hannah also worked as a Behaviour Change Researcher for the Scotland 2020 Climate Group. At the same time, she began her role as a writer/editor for Sustainable Brand before taking on the position of Carbon Market Consultant with LTS International. In 2015, she became an Online Learning Educator for Sustainability and Social Responsibility with the University of Edinburgh, as well as a Corporate Sustainability Writer at the Institute for Environmental IT Hamburg. The following year, Hannah embarked on a Science Fellowship with the Newton-Bhabha Virtual Centre on Nitrogen Efficiency whilst commencing a PhD at the University of Edinburgh. Since 2017, she has worked with Our World in Data, currently serving as Deputy Editor and Lead Researcher, and has been a Senior Researcher at the University of Oxford. Hannah is also an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society.
Combining her groundbreaking work with her writing talent, Hannah is the author of two books, ‘Not the End of the World’, which was shortlisted for the Unwin Award, and ‘Clearing the Air’, both of which tackle questions, myths and solutions to climate change and sustainability. She has contributed to articles published by the BBC, The Atlantic, The Guardian, The Washington Post, Vox, WIRED, New Scientist, and more, and posts regularly on her Substack, Sustainability by Numbers. Hannah is also the co-host of the ‘Solving for Climate’ podcast with Rob Stewart.
A changemaking presence in climate activism, Hannah’s TED talk, ‘Are We the Last Generation – Or the First Sustainable One?’, offers a positive lens to the climate crisis. Operating at the intersection of environmental change, technology and global development, her experience in data science and expertise on sustainability make her the perfect speaker for a multitude of events, from climate conferences to science summits.
