A preeminent expert on the environment, Gina McCarthy is famed for her expertise on air quality and her position as the first White House National Climate Advisor under Joe Biden’s Presidency. After graduating with a BA in Social Anthropology from the University of Massachusetts and an MS in Environmental Health Engineering, Planning and Policy from Tufts University, Gina began to build her illustrious career in environmental advocacy. In 1980, Gina embarked on a career in health and environment, working as the City of Canton’s Health Agent. Before long, Gina held several high calibre roles in the Civil Service of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, such as Deputy Secretary of the Massachusetts Office of Commonwealth Development. With a keen interest in environmental issues, Gina has also been the Environmental Advisor to five Governors of Massachusetts. In 2004, Gina was also appointed as the Commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection.
In 2009, Gina was selected by President Obama to be the Assistant Administrator for the EPA’s Office of Air and Radiation, and in 2013 Gina became the 13th Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency. She has also worked as Director of the Center for Climate, Health and the Global Environment, a Harvard T.H and Ronay A. Menschel Senior Leadership Fellow of the School of Public Health, a Professor of Public Health Practice at the School of Public Health and the President and CEO of the Natural Resources Defense Council. In 2020, President Joe Biden elected Gina to become the first White House National Climate Advisor and Head of the White House Office of Climate Policy. In this role, Gina urged tech companies to censor the spread of misinformation regarding climate change.
