Olympic speaker, Paralympics gold medallist, television and radio presenter, sports speaker, writer and commentator Giles Long is arguably one of the most successful Paralympian’s in British history. Competing in three separate Paralympics Games, Long garnered world wide recognition for his swimming abilities and has gone on to achieve a number of accolades outside his work as a sportsman.
Taking part in his first Paralympics in 1996 Giles Long gained three medals at the Atlanta Games including gold in the 100m butterfly, a global sensation and much sought after Olympic speaker from this moment onwards Long continued to demonstrate his skill at the Summer 2000 Paralympics in Sydney, where he won a further two gold medals, once again for the 100m butterfly, also for the 4x100m Freestyle and silver for the 4x100m medley relay.
As well as working as an Olympic speaker Giles Long MBE has participated in various other international competitions and gained gold medals at both the IPC World and European Championships. Alongside his work as a sportsman Giles has also become known for his work as a television presenter, notably as one of the commentators and sports speakers for Channel 4’s coverage of the summer 2012 Paralympics Games, for which he won a BAFTA. Prior to this Giles had previously worked as the commentator and sports speaker for the IPC World Swimming Championships in 2010 and the Paralympics World Cup in 2011.
Gaining even more feathers in his cap Giles Long has also worked as a public and after dinner speaker, sharing with audiences his experiences as both a sportsman and a disabled person. He is the inventor of the LEXI graphics system which was used to help explain to both audiences and governors the complex system of classification for Paralympians and has also worked as a writer and journalist for a number of British publications.
