George The Poet

Influential lyric artist, George Mpanga, best known as George the Poet, is changing the UK’s perception of social, political and economic issues through his creative spoken word. Born and raised in London, George’s youth was spent involved in rap and grime music, before diversifying into performance poetry as a University of Cambridge politics, psychology and sociology student. Having the academic knowledge, combined with his personal experiences as the son of Ugandan parents, living in the cultural melting pot of London, George’s lyrical work shines a light on controversial issues faced. Backed by his musical influences, and time as a signed artist, George’s transition into poetry was natural, and has seen him revered as an icon of British culture, selected in 2018 to contribute to the royal wedding proceedings of Prince Harry and Megan Markle.

Having gained a reputation for his thought-provoking commentary, and musical distinction, George has been the focus of much media involvement. Debuting his single ‘My City’ George caught the attention of the BBC who chose him to front to coverage of Hackney Weekend 2012, followed by a commissioned piece for Sky Sports F1 and a collaboration with Which group, in the form of the ‘It’s Yours’ track. Establishing himself in the mainstream media allowed George to further influence high-end decision making on the issues he dealt with, and as a member of the National Council of Arts Council England since 2018, he has supported other creatives in replicating his impact.

Podcast of the Year 2020 as named by the Broadcasting Press Guild, George’s critically acclaimed series ‘Have You Heard George’s Podcast’ debuted in 2018. Combining first-hand experience, original music and compelling storytelling, the podcast extensively covers topics ranging from Grenfell Tower to police stop and search and was given the Podcast Award by Peabody Awards 2020 for its relevance and authenticity.
