Gabrielius Landsbergis is a Lithuanian statesman, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, and newly appointed Bernard and Susan Liautaud Visiting Fellow at Stanford University's Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, effective September 16, 2025. He played a central role in shaping Lithuania’s voice in European and global affairs and is widely recognised for his diplomatic insight, commitment to democratic values, and support for international cooperation.
Born in Vilnius in 1982, Landsbergis studied history and later earned a master’s degree in international relations and diplomacy from Vilnius University. His career began in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he served as a diplomat in Belgium and Luxembourg before working in the offices of both the Lithuanian Government and the President. These early experiences gave him a strong foundation in international relations and public service.
Landsbergis was elected to the European Parliament in 2014, where he worked on foreign policy and regional security. From 2015 to 2024, he chaired the Homeland Union Lithuanian Christian Democrats, leading the party through major electoral cycles. As a member of the Seimas from 2016 to 2024 and as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2020 to 2024, he was at the forefront of Lithuania’s diplomacy, strengthening ties with NATO, supporting Ukraine and promoting European unity. In recognition of his leadership, he received the Transatlantic Leadership Award in 2024 and, in 2025, was awarded the Order of Brilliant Star with Grand Cordon by Taiwan.
