The highly regarded business executive earned a BA in Government from Harvard University and then completed a JD in Law at Stanford University Law School. In 1998, he joined Goldman Sachs as an Investment Banking Associate before becoming Senior Vice President of Field Operations at Tellme Networks. During his tenure at Tellme Networks, despite a tumultuous period for the tech sector, he succeeded in building a sustainable and profitable business and raised $250M in capital. One of his first highly successful exits, the company was acquired by Microsoft for $800M.
He joined the White House as a Fellow for the Secretary of Defence in 2009, working as a Special Assistant to Robert Gates. Running projects in Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan, Emil also led department-wide budget-cutting efforts, improving efficiency by reducing overheads and streamlining bureaucracy. In 2012, he joined Klout as COO, scaling the social media analytics company that later sold to Lithium Technologies for $200M. Following that, he became the Chief Business Officer at Uber, raising $15BN from investors, leading the company’s entry into the Chinese market and the merger with its main competitor Didi Chiuxing.
Playing an instrumental role in the exponential growth witnessed by the company, Emil also launched Uber Business and Uber Military. Moreover, he facilitated the strategic acquisition of companies that formed the foundation of Uber’s advanced technology group, which developed Uber’s autonomous vehicle program.
