Denis Irwin is a retired Republic of Ireland professional footballer who built a fantastic career and is deemed a Manchester United legend. Throughout his time at United, he won a number of titles, including both domestic and European success. Irwin’s career started at Leeds United in 1983, he made 72 appearances for the club before moving to Oldham Athletic in 1986. He enjoyed a hugely successful stint at Oldham and helped guide them to the FA Cup semi-finals and the League Cup final in 1990. Irwin eventually made his move to Manchester United in 1990 and he would eventually stay there for an extremely successful 12 years. Irwin played a total of 368 times for the club and scored 22 goals, as a fullback, scoring goals wasn’t an influential part of his role but he was a defensive genius.
His first goal came in a 3-0 win against Norwich in 1991. During his time at Manchester United, Irwin was a part of a squad that won seven Premier League titles, a Champions League, three FA Cups and much, much more. He has been considered a legend of the club and built a fantastic legacy, he was a part of some of United’s greatest ever squads and was duly awarded a testimonial game in 2000.
Many legends of the game took part to celebrate what can only be described as a remarkable footballing career. After Manchester United, Irwin finished his career at Wolverhampton Wanderers, he played 75 times for the club before retiring in 2004 at 38 years of age. Between 1990 and 1999, Denis Irwin played 56 times for the Republic of Ireland, he scored 4 goals in the process and helped them to qualify for the Euros and also for the World Cup. Since retiring, Irwin has spent time working as a presenter on MUTV, his love for the club has been shown throughout his time as a presenter.
