Risk consideration? An incredibly popular topic in the world of after dinner speaking due to the complex nature of assessing the future, based on the past. Often in business, numbers are the diet of those who want to make precise decisions over taking the risky option. Professor Risk is an incredible statistician, who was born to communicate complicated statements, and decipher jargon in a way any audience can understand.
David is fantastic at diving deep into the topic of risk, breaking down the numbers, the emotion, giving the audience the real way to decide upon how risk can really be calculated. He can put complicated analytical data into context, and showing numbers can influence people to make a decision. David Spiegelhalter doesn't pull this level of knowledge out of a business venture, or from risky stock investments. He is actually the professor of Public Understanding of Risk and Professor of Biostatistics, at the University of Cambridge. With a background in medical statistics, he is no stranger to the importance of calculated risk.
Statistically, speaking, he has worked on more books than some professional writings, with over 190 refereed publications, and the co-author of 6 textbooks. The risk loving statistician also holds an Honorary Fellow of the Institute for Risk Management, an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, and he was elected Fellow of The Royal Society in 2005.
His more recent work involving Mike Pearson and Owen Smith is also fascinating, using quantitative methods to better understand risk within society. David is also a TV Superstar, appearing with other famous scientists like Brian Cox on a frequent basis on shows like The Life Scientific hosted by Jim Al-Khalili, the BBC4 documentary The Joy of Stats, Morgan Freeman's Through the Wormhole, and much, much more.
With the tremendous amount of work that he did for the medical sector, he awarded an OBE in 2006 for services to medical statistics division. David is simply an incredible member of academia, well educated, and passionate about his topic. His after dinner speeches are refreshing, bold, and will make you think twice about closing that deal without running through the numbers one more time. A lifetime working with numbers, Professor Risk is one of a kind - and also a world champion in loop.

"We were absolutely thrilled to welcome Professor Sir David Spiegelhalter to this year’s OGUK HSE Conference. Hearing from an expert outwith our own sector was an opportunity for our audience to open their minds to new ways of thinking and analysis. His engaging, relaxed and open presentation style was a refreshing break from the monotony of many PowerPoint presentations delivered on zoom and his openness to tackle all of the questions that were submitted on the platform was most appreciated. Our attendees left the session inspired and energised to consider the importance of risk communication in the age of COVID – and armed with a few excellent questions to ask about data." - Louise, Acting Events Manager, Oil & Gas UK
