Former Chief Executive of NHS England, Sir David Nicholson, is a public policy analyst and an expert speaker that has an impressive career that spans over 30 years, working in mental health, acute hospitals and as chief executive of West Midlands Strategic Health Authority and then of the NHS. Initially graduating from the University of the West of England with a degree in History and Politics, David joined the NHS as a graduate trainee where he spent 10 years working in mental health. During this time, David was involved in implementing the policy of the closing of the old asylums and developing care in the community services.
It was in 1998 that David moved into the acute hospital sector, and as a result of his 10 years experience in policy in the mental health sector, he was appointed the Chief executive of the Doncaster and Montague NHS Hospitals Trust, just as the NHS first-wave was underway. In 1997, he moved to the Trent NHS Regional Office as the Regional Director of Performance before being appointed as Regional Director in November 2000. During this time, David also worked as Regional Director for the old Eastern and West Midlands Regions, Director of Health and Social Care for the Midlands and East of England to name a few. In 2006, David became the seventh NHS Chief Executive, managing a budget of £90bn and 1.3m employees, before stepping down from the position in 2014.
Most recently, David was appointed the chairman of the newly-established State Health Services Organisation in Cyprus, to help develop a healthcare system similar to the one in the UK. As a result of his substantial contributions to national health services, David was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 2004 New Year Honours, and in 2010 was appointed Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath in the New Years Honours. Sir David Nicholson is a highly experienced and knowledgeable individual, having been apart and influenced a number of policies and organisations that helped to set up and develop the NHS into what it is today.
