David Howell is a professional golfer who has played in tournaments and on courses all over the world for the last three decades. A consummate professional, David is a highly respected and well-thought-of golfer who plies his trade on The European Tour. During his career, David has seven professional victories to his name to date, five of which came on the European Tour. After struggling with a back injury in recent years, it was a fantastic sight to see him return and win The Dunhill Links Championship in 2013; a victory which led to a significant improvement in form in the tournaments that followed. David joined the tour in 1996, with his first professional win coming at the Australian PGA Championship in 1998 where he won by seven strokes.
The 2005/06 season was arguably his most successful as he won the 2005 HSBC Champions Tournament, beating the infamous Tiger Woods in the process, before also finishing as runner up in both the 2005 Daily Telegraph Dunlop Masters and 2005 Nissan Irish Open. David's good form continued as he then won the BMW International Open in 2005 ahead of becoming the first English winner since Sir Nick Faldo to take the crown at the 2006 BMW Championship. As a result of his skill and performance out on the course, David was named in both the 2004 and 2006 European Ryder Cup teams; both teams went on to win the tournament. Ten years on from being named in his first Ryder Cup team, at the Alstom Open de France David became the second-youngest player to reach 500 appearances in European Tour history and the 27th golfer in total.
As of recent years, David has won the Becko Classic at the Montgomerie Maxx in 2015. Consistent back, wrist and shoulder injuries eventually forced him to retire from the BMW South African Open in 2018 before he went onto to make his European Tour history-making 600th appearance later that year. More of his recent achievements include being named the chairman of the European Tour's Tournament Committee in 2017 as well as being selected for the five-man selection panel for making the decision on the 2016 Ryder Cup captain.
