Former England international goalkeeper, Dave Beasant is a footballing legend, he is officially the oldest individual to be a part of an English Football League squad after he was named on the substitute bench for Stevenage against Southend in 2015. Beasant has played for some of England’s largest domestic clubs, with long stints at Chelsea, Nottingham Forest and Wimbledon. At the age of 20, Beasant broke into the Wimbledon side making his debut against Blackpool.
He played for Wimbledon for 9 years and earned himself an impressive 340 appearances, during his time at Wimbledon he won promotion from the Fourth Division, Third Division and Second Division in successive seasons- this was an amazing achievement and one of the greatest in domestic football history. Beasant was the first ever goalkeeper to save a penalty in an FA Cup final match, by saving the penalty it meant Wimbledon won 1-0 and were crowned FA Cup champions.
After that season, Beasant moved to Newcastle United for a national record transfer fee at the time for someone in the goalkeeper position, he played here for one season before moving to English giants Chelsea. He played 133 times in 4 years for Chelsea before moving down south to Southampton. Beasant was named Southampton’s Player of the Season in the 1994-95 season as he helped Southampton stay in the Premier League on goal difference as Manchester City were relegated.
Beasant joined two time European Cup winners Nottingham Forest in 1997 and would play there for 4 years, making 139 appearances for the club. He was a part of Nottingham Forest’s champion campaign back to the Premier League in the 1997-98 season. He became Forest’s oldest ever player at 42 years of age before moving to Portsmouth. He played for a number of other clubs after this without really cementing a place in the first team. Although Beasant was getting older he was seemingly just as good in goal, he enjoyed a number of coaching roles and most notably had the role at Northern Ireland and Fulham.
Beasant enjoyed a sensational career which spanned well over 20 years and he earned himself an impressive 775 domestic appearances, as well as two appearances for the England national side.
