Darren Clarke is widely known for his talents as a professional golfer. Having won a number of prominent competitions, including World Golf Championships and the European Tour. First playing golf when at Wake Field University, Darren went from strength to strength progressing to represent Royal Dungannon before becoming a professional player in the 1990s. His first big competition came in 1991, playing in the 1991 Open Championship. Finishing in 64th place, Darren also moved to 41st in the Order of Merit.
In 1993 Darren made his breakthrough as a player, winning his first European Tour event- the 1993 Alfred Dunhill Open. In the following year, Darren was fortunate to play in his first US Open, which was followed by seven different top-10s with one of his most notable games being the 1995 Portuguese Open. Darren then went on to play in the Linde German Masters, where he claimed his second European Tour victory. Other prominent victories followed, such as coming in second to Ian Woosnam at the 1997 Volvo PGA Championship, winning his first championship with the 1997 Open Championship and finishing 2nd in the Order of Merit in 1998.
Many more victories continued to come Darren’s way, including the 2000 World Golf Championship where he beat Tiger Woods, taking the title at the 2002 Compass Group English Open, winning the 2008 BMW Asian Open and the KLM Open. He was also able to secure wins at the Iberdrola Open and the 2011 Open Championship. Having represented Ireland both as an amateur and a professional, to date Darren has claimed wins in 14 European Tours, three PGA Tours, three Japan Golf Tours, one Asian Tour, one Sunshine Tour and one Challenge Tour. He has also claimed the Texaco Ireland Sportstar Golf Award in 1993, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2003 and 2004.
A nominee for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award and appointed OBE for the services he has provided to golf, Darren Clarke is widely regarded as a fan favourite.
