Charles Bolden, former astronaut, administrator and United States Major General, has enjoyed an extensive and distinguished career, serving his country in many formats. With more than five decades of experience, Charles has proven himself a fearless leader and unfaltering team player, qualities which saw him appointed NASA Administrator in 2009. Having been selected by NASA in 1980, Charles spent nearly 40 years at the forefront of the space programme in various capacities. From Director of Flight Crew Operations to Chief of Safety Division at JSC, Charles has had an influential impact on every sector of NASA. As an astronaut, he completed four space flights, 680 hours in space and was the first person to ride the Launch Complex 39 for rapid space shuttle escape, a testament to his pioneering nature. Drawing on his experiences, Charles educates audiences on essential skills for space and business, such as risk management and performing under pressure. In 2009 Charles was appointed by former president, Barack Obama as the Administrator of NASA a role he held for eight years, in which he inspired the next generation and spearheaded the future of space exploration.
Earning a degree in Electrical Science from the United States Naval Academy, Charles pursued his career in the US Marine Corps, becoming a Naval Aviator. With missions taking him to Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos it wasn’t long before he progressed from his early career to Marine Corps Officer, and his last military appointment as Marine Corps Major General in 1998, a testament to his dedication to serving his country. Throughout his military pursuits, Charles racked up over 6000 flying hours, completed assignments across the globe and made an influential impact on the regiments he served. Since retiring from service in 2017, Charles has focused on his role as the Founder and CEO Emeritus of The Charles F Bolden Group, run by veterans. With such an accomplished career, he has also gained international recognition in the form of accolades such as the Défense Distinguished Service medal and the Legion of Merit, and demand for speaking engagements.
