A 3-times UK and Ireland champion speaker with 20 years’ experience in the space industry, Bob helps technical experts and organisations get the best value from their brightest talent by communicating their expertise effectively inside the organisation and externally through his communications program “Great Technical Speaking It’s Not Rocket Science”. Bob started his speaking career in 1995 to overcome his fear of public speaking. By 2002, he’d won the UK and Ireland International speech championship which took him to America to compete in the final stages of the World Public Speaking Championship.
Alongside that he won the national championship in Evaluation speaking, learning to provide effective feedback. Finally, he captured the Humorous Speaking championship in 2009 providing him with one of most valuable assets for any speaker. Alongside his speaking, he spent 20 years working mainly on the European Space Agency missions to Mercury and Mars. He was able to see the challenges facing technical experts and organisations that made their communications both critical and valuable.
In 2017, after finishing on the Exo-Mars Rover project, he switched to full-time communications consultancy and speaker coaching so that he could develop his integrated communications program especially for technical experts and organisations called “Great Technical Speaking It’s Not Rocket Science”. His speaking focuses on the problems seen in science and technology through miscommunication, the impact it has on projects and the organisation, and the solutions available to improve both communication and the value of expertise in the organisation.
It is often thought the key to improving communications is to train individuals better. More often than not it is the organisation that constrains and limits the individual to poor quality communications and thereby making it difficult to improve the standard in the business.
