A legendary former cricket player and coach, Andy Flower was for a long time Zimbabwe’s only batsman of true Test quality in all conditions. For a period of about two years from the start of 2000 he was so phenomenally consistent that he had no rival, firmly making him the best player in Zimbabwe’s history. Throughout his sporting career, Flower has continued to take on the tough roles, moving into coaching within the England set-up, firstly as assistant to Peter Moores and then was named interim coach for the 2009 West Indies Tour. It was only a few weeks after that Flower was made team director, an impressive move up in the cricket sporting world.
As captain of the Zimbabwe cricket team, Andy led them to their first Test victory against Pakistan in 1994-95, and then became the first Zimbabwean to lead a Test tour of England, in 2000. Widely known for being an assured player of fast bowling since his early days as an opener, Flower matured into one of the best players of spin in the world, and on the 2001 Indian tour he made a magnificent 540 runs for twice out.
After a phenomenal playing career, Flower announced his retirement from international cricket after the 2003 World Cup. Making a true statement on the ‘death of democracy’, Flower stated the World Cup with an unprecedented protest with his equally brave team-mate Henry Olonga. For a short period, Flower played cricket for Essex, where he was joined by his brother Grant in 2005. They became the first brothers to score first-class centuries for the county in the same innings against Lancashire that year. However, after suffering from an injury Flower had to step down from Essex, and took an offer to become England’s assistant coach.
During his first two years working with the England team, Flower had helped the team win two Ashes campaigns, achieve unmatched levels of consistency in 50-over cricket, and delivered England their first global ICC Trophy at the World Twenty20 in May 2010. At the pinnacle of his coaching career, Flower was at the helm during the 2011 Test-series where England battered India 4-0 that culminated in them moving to No. 1 in the Test rankings.
