Amitabh Kant is a renowned businessman, at present, he is most notably the CEO of NITI. Prior to the world of business, Amitabh graduated with a degree in Economics from St. Stephens, Delhi University and a Masters degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University. He was a Chevening Scholar and has undertaken the Mid Career Programme of Harvard University, John F Kennedy School of Government and Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad.
As well as being the CEO of NITI Aayog (National Institution for Transforming India), Amitabh is also a member of the Indian Administrative Service, IAS. In partnership with the States, NITI is responsible for developing an environment of growth by being a catalyst for knowledge. Ultimately, it aims to encourage the contribution of State Governments in policy making and enhance cooperative federalism.
On top of his position in India’s business industry, Amitabh is also an author, publishing such titles as Branding India – An Incredible Story, Make in India, Startup India, Incredible India and God’s Own Country. Moving into the tourism sector, Amitabh branded India and Kerala as leading tourism destinations. It is widely considered that Amitabh is responsible for the rise in Kerala’s tourism, through his works of literature. Additionally, he developed the Guest is God campaign, to encourage Taxi Drivers, Guides, immigration officials to take active roles in the tourism development process. With his passion for tourism at its peak, Amitabh was the National Project Director of the Rural Tourism Project of UNDP, which focused on filtering tourism to Indian villages which could offer handicrafts, handloom and culture to increase the local economy.
Until 2016, Amitabh was responsible for the application of industrial policies, monitoring the performance of specific industrial sectors, formulation of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), strategies related to Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) in the fields of Patents, Trademarks, Industrial Designs and Geographical Indications, whilst at the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion.
Over the course of his career, Amitabh has been the Chairman and CEO of the Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor Development Corporation. Whilst working with the DMIC, Amitabh aided the urbanization of India to integrate next-generation technologies, with a basis of economic growth. Though this may seem like a futuristic fantasy, Amitabh has already introduced new technology in sectors like fishing and food production.
As a testament to his prominent career, Amitabh has been recognised with the Economic Time Policy Change Agent of the Year Award, the TV Personality of the Year Award, the NDTV Administrator of the Year Award and the Distinguished Fellowship of the Institute of Directors. He has also received a Globe Award in 2016 for his role in Transforming Governance for the 21st Century.
