What is the Metaverse?
The Metaverse is defined as a ‘network of 3D virtual worlds focused on social connection’. These 3D worlds continue to exist even when you are not playing in them, characterised by their persistence. Combining aspects of the digital and physical worlds, they are accessed using virtual and augmented reality, as well as PCs, game consoles and mobile devices. They also have their own digital economies, in which users can create, sell and purchase goods for monetary value.

Believed to be the future of the internet, Metaverses have been spoken about by the likes of Mark Zuckerberg and other leading tech experts. Made up by various forms of technology, Metaverses can include virtual reality, augmented reality and digital economies. They consist of worlds that continue to exist even when you are not playing, combinations of both the physical and digital world and economies where users are able to purchase, create or sell items.
Put simply, a metaverse includes you and your avatar interacting with others in a digital environment. Aspects of metaverses can be found in existing video games, including the famed Fortnite online shooter game. It is also used to describe the internet as one single, universal virtual world.
Many of the world's leading companies have made statements on the metaverse, with Disney saying that the future of their company includes the metaverse and 'blending physical and digital experiences'. McDonald's has also shown their interest in the metaverse, filing trademark applications for a metaverse-based 'virtual restaurant'.
