Former Chair of the UK Health and Safety Executive, Dame Judith Hackitt is a British engineer and civil servant who is the current Chair of manufacturing trade body EEF.
Her career started with a fifteen year run at Exxon Chemicals which followed her graduation from University. She later left the Fawley Refinery to join Chemical Industries Association in 1998 where she held the position of Director General from 2002-2005. Before being appointed Chair of the Health and Safety Commission in 2007 she worked in Brussels for the European Chemical Industries Council (CEFIC). By April 2009 both organisations had merged resulting in Judith becoming Chair of the Health and Safety Executive.
2016 saw Judith replace Martin Temple as Chair of manufacturing trade body EEF which led to him becoming Chair of the Health and Safety Executive. Judith’s career has been full of impressive responsibilities and she now acts as Chair of the Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety. This is an organisation that was commissioned by the Government as a consequence of the Grenfell Tower fire.
Listed as one of the Top 50 Women in UK Engineering by the Telegraph, Judith is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Institution of Chemical Engineers. 2006 was a big year for Judith as she was appointed Commander of the Order of British Empire for her impressive services to health and safety. She then went on to receive the DBE title in the 2016 New Year Honours.
