Dorian West

FORMER LEICESTER TIGERS, ENGLAND, BRITISH LIONS HOOKER AND CURRENT COACH OF NORTHAMPTON SAINTS

One of the most talented hookers of his time, Dorian West offers the rare distinction of having been both a professional rugby star and police officer in the armed response unit of the Leicestershire Constabulary. He was part of England’s historic World Cup winning team in 2003.

In his early years, West played as a flanker for Leicester Tigers before he was converted into a hooker. After showing good form for his club side, he made his England debut getting called up by then coach, Clive Woodward.

West became first-choice hooker at club level, thus making him an important part of the England squad. He was capped in the 2001 Six Nations and following tours. Soon after he was called up as a replacement to the British and Irish Lions side, earning himself a position on the bench after a string of impressive performances.

He would also form an integral member of one of the most successful Leicester Tigers sides in history, playing his part in Heineken Cup finalist teams in both 2001 and 2002.

His crowning moment though came in 2003 when he was included in the England squad for the Rugby World Cup. The team ran riot with West coming off the bench to help England book their place in the final, beating France. The team went on to win the final in a dramatic game against Australia, to become the first team from the Northern Hemisphere to win the World Cup.

After the World Cup, West retired to pursue a career in rugby coaching. He would become forwards coach at England U21s and later Northampton Saints where he spent eleven years. Today he is the forwards coach at Sales Sharks.
