Representing England eight times between 2000 and 2002, David Flatman is a former rugby union player and now sports pundit. David excelled in his position as prop whether he was playing for England, or club rugby for Saracens and Bath.
David was inspired by his Father, who played as a prop, to start playing rugby. Initially he started playing rugby at his local club, Maidstone FC – David was only eight at this point. At eighteen, David appeared in the England Schools Squad alongside Steve Brothwick, Alex Sanderson, Mike Tindall, Andre Sheridan and Jonny Wilkinson. In 1997 David and his England Schools squad toured Australia and then in 1998 David went on to tour Argentina with England Colts. Having already played for a variety of teams, he went on to represent London & South-West and England under-21s against South Africa in 1998.
David began his senior career in 1998 when he began playing for Saracens, and in 2000, he went on to win his first cap for England, appearing in tour matches against Gauteng Falcos and North-West Leopards. In 2001, David appeared as a Graham Rowntree’s replacement in the San Francisco and Burnaby tests against Canada and the United States – this was on Davids second tour with England. Since making his debut against France, David became a regular in the England A side. David played in seven England A team games prior to being called to the senior squad for the final test of the 200-1 season at Twickenham against France.
After a total win of eight England caps David retired from rugby in 2012, following his retirement from rugby David became Head of Communications at Bath Rugby for two years before following his calling as a pundit. David often works alongside Mark Durden-Smith and Austin Healey as a pundit for Channel 5, BT Sport and ITV. Flats and Shanks is a highly informative yet humorous rugby podcast presented by David and former Saracens team mate Tom Shanklin. David is an extremely entertaining and well liked pundit and he was named at the fifth best sports pundit on British TV by The Daily Telegraph in 2016.
