With a career spanning fifteen years as a renowned and formidable hunt jockey, Mick Fitzgerald is one of the most respected riders of his trade. Riding his first two winners in 1988, Fitzgerald’s career got off to a slow start before changing tune in 1991 by riding a significant amount of winners as well as striking up a partnership with Ray Callow’s Duncan Idaho. A magnificent horse racing speaker, Fitzgerald often talks about his time at the top of his game alongside the rigorous training involved to stay competitive as a jockey.
Amongst some of Mick’s big winners include the 1996 Grand National on Rough Quest as well as the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 1999 on See More Business. In 2005, Fitzgerald returned from injury to win the Hennessy Gold Cup on Trabolgan at Newbury. As a horse racing speaker, Mick describes his battle to overcome the adversity of injury and the specialness of his victory at Newbury alongside the inspiration he gained from the horse he rode.
In 2008, Mick fell at the second fence of the Grand National and suffered spinal injuries, forcing him into retirement. However Fitzgerald has gone on to enjoy a successful media career alongside his speaking and event hosting commitments. Mick regularly appears as a TV Presenter on Sky’s At the Races, as well as becoming a stalwart figure for Channel 4’s racing coverage. For Mick, the appeal of horse racing is still strong and his passion for his former sport is always noticeable both on and off screen.
Mick enjoys his time as an event host, guiding corporate clients through the intricacies of horse racing during days out at the races. A warm and charming character, Mick is happy to lead proceedings and ensure everyone enjoys themselves. A legend of the sport, Mick is one of the most sought after sports speakers thanks to his varied range of knowledge and obvious passion and competition.
