Ian Rush is best known for being a former Welsh footballer, playing for the esteemed Liverpool Football club. He also held a significant position on the Welsh national team during both the 1980s and 1990s. After retiring from playing football, Ian went on to work as a television presenter, sports analyst and a football speaker.
In 1980 Ian was purchased by Liverpool Football club for a record breaking £300,000 in the 1980s. Ian proved to be a great player, leading a consistent, strong and impressive career. He was voted PFA Young Player of the Year just three years after joining Liverpool, helping the team to a number of significant victories. Ian helped Liverpool to claim two consecutive First Division League Cup doubles. Additionally, Ian managed to claim the European Golden Boot Award, making him the first British footballer to claim the award.
Due to such a successful tenure whilst at Liverpool, Ian has generated himself a respected reputation as a football speaker. He is also often called upon to share his tales of time with the team at after-dinner speaking events. With stints at a number of other football clubs such as Chester, Leeds United, Newcastle United and Sheffield United as well as Sydney Olympic Ian knows what it takes to maximise peak performance.
Alongside his time in domestic football team, Ian also had a successful career playing in the Welsh national side. Playing for Wales, Ian accumulated 28 goals over 73 games which placed him as a fan favourite. Whilst with Wales Ian was awarded the Football Writers of the Year award as well as the PFA’s Young Player and Player of the year award.
Ian retired from playing football during 1999, but not wanting to completely give up his passion adopted the role of being a media personality. He had various presenting roles, working with ESPN as an analyst and Sky Sports as a pundit and reporter. Alongside media responsibilities Ian also shared his time with being the Elite Performance Director for the Welsh Football Trust. Additionally, Ian returned to Leicester City to become the Soccer Schools Ambassador as well as working with the commercial team developing partnerships. Ian’s commitment to football has not gone unnoticed, in 2006 he was inducted into the English Football Hall Of Fame.
