Virginia Dignum is an advocate for ethical AI and the author of “Responsible Artificial Intelligence”. Examining the ethical implications of AI systems and their integration in our world, Virginia also serves as a Professor of Responsible AI at the Umea University. Having been the Chair of the European Conference on Artificial Intelligence, Virginia is an Executive Committee Member of the IEEE Global Initiative for Ethical Considerations in Autonomous Systems. She is also an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management at the Delft University of Technology.
Member of the Global AI Council at the World Economic Forum, Virginia’s work is directed towards developing policies and awareness towards the responsible use of AI. Virginia is also a member of the European Commission High Level Expert Group on AI. Some other prominent roles Virginia currently holds include Fellow of the European Artificial Intelligence Association, Founding Board Member of ALLAI Nederland and Fellow of the European Artificial Intelligence Association. In 2024, Virginia was awarded a Gold Medal of Honour from the Mayor of her hometown, Oeiras in Portugal.
