
Tom Newton-Dunn is a leading political journalist and commentator with over 20 years of industry experience. From print media to digital and broadcast, Tom has pioneered the way for journalism with major political and defence stories across the globe. Currently serving as the Political Journalist and Broadcaster for The Times, he is known for bridging Westminster politics with public debate using clear communication. Throughout his inspirational career, he has interviewed 7 British Prime Ministers and the US President, Donald Trump.
Tom’s career began in 1997 when he joined the Daily Mirror’s graduate trainee scheme after studying English Literature at the University of Edinburgh. Soon after, he was made the paper’s Defence Correspondent. In 2004, he moved to The Sun, where he was promoted from Defence Editor to Political Editor, which he continued for 11 years. Tom became a regular speaker on BBC1’s ‘Question Time’ and BBC Radio 4’s ‘Any Questions’, along with frequently appearing on Sky News, Good Morning Britain, Newsnight and The Andrew Marr Show.
In 2020, Tom took on the new venture of helping to launch Times Radio, serving as the Chief Political Commentator and the presenter of its Sunday morning political programme. He then began to write a weekly column for the Evening Standard to continue sharing his insight. In 2022, he moved to TalkTV during its launch of the hour-long weeknight programme ‘First Addition’, which he hosted. In 2019, he hosted a Tory leadership debate between Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt, further highlighting his ability to keep the discussion balanced whilst handling high-pressure political exchanges.
Tom’s inspirational work has earned him various journalist awards, with his first accolade being in 2007 with Scoop of the Year at the What the Papers Say Awards, which he then won again in 2018. His reveal of the cockpit tapes behind the Matty Hull friendly fire incident earned him the 2008 British Press Award. In addition, he won the Politics Journalism Award at the British Journalism Awards for revealing the Plebgate scandal. Tom continuously blends his deep political knowledge with engaging storytelling, drawing on his years of experience and knowledge.
