Theresa Claiborne has spent 43 years at the forefront of the aviation industry and is best known as the first female African American pilot in the United States Air Force. With over 23,000 hours logged throughout her career, Theresa is an inspiration to people all over the world that one can defy all odds to achieve their goals through hard work and determination. Back in 1981, Theresa joined the United States Air Force as a second lieutenant – the first ever Black woman pilot in the history of the USAF. Joining United Airlines as a Flight Officer in 1990, Theresa broke all gender and racial barriers that dictated that she would be able to achieve her dreams. Despite being told she was too short to be a United Airlines pilot, Theresa proved her mettle and craft, thus paving the way for countless people today. Clocking over 20,000 hours in her distinguished career, of which 3,000 were military hours, Theresa is one of the most respected figures in the aviation industry.
In her illustrious career, Theresa served as first officer for Boeing 737, 747, 757 and 767 as well as being Captain for a Boeing 757 and 767. In 2024, Theresa retired her career with United Airlines. Empowering women to go after their dreams, Theresa is the Co-Founder & President of Sister of the Skies, an organisation that is composed of the black female pilots. This section makes up for 0.5% of the total professional pilot career field, displaying an evident lack of diversity. Theresa’s aim is to create a space for young people, where they can be inspired and make inspiring moves for upcoming generations. Theresa is also a Board Member of the Women Air Force Service Pilots Museum and Board Member of the Great Dames of Aviation.
Inducted in the Organisation of Black Aerospace Professionals Hall of Fame, there are few as accomplished as Theresa. She is also a proud recipient of the Brigadier General Charles E. McGee Aviation Inspiration Award. She has been a trailblazer for women in aviation, affirming that with determination, resilience and skill, it is possible to break any barrier.
