Steve McClaren is a professional football manager and former player who previously managed the English national team. An expert in the sport, he has become a popular keynote and after dinner speaker since his time on the pitch has come to an end, he now entertains audiences with his stories from the side lines. Most famous for his stint as the England manager, Steve was in charge of the team for a short 18 games starting in 2006 and ending eighteen months later. During his time in the role, he made bold team decisions, popularly appointed Terry Venables as his assistant and persevered despite some tough losses. Despite his best efforts, England didn’t qualify for Euro 2008, and thus ended Steve's time as the manager.
At an early age, Steve showed his commitment and passion for sports, choosing to plan: football, tennis, squash, and rugby at school. After finishing school he turned professional in football playing for Hull City, Derby County, Lincoln City and Bristol City over the course of a thirteen year career before an injury forced his retirement. Transitioning into a coaching position was a natural progression for Steve. He started with the youth team at Oxford United, before moving to Derby County where, as the assistant manager, he won promotion to the Premier League in his first year. This solidified him as a talented coach and manager. The success of Derby County led Steve to move to top team, Manchester United, who won every title contested under the coaching of Steve. From there his career went from strength to strength and involved, managing Middlesbrough, Twente and most recently, Queens Park Rangers.
Aside from playing, managing and coaching, Steve has also dabbled in punditry, initially being asked to commentate on the 2008 Euro games by the BBC. In the same year, he joined BBC Radio 5 Live, as an analyst and has since been featured on TalkSport a number of times. In recent years Steve has become popular on the after dinner speaking circuit due to his extensive and impressive career across all areas of football. Through a series of stories told by Steve, he explains the ins and outs of the glory days, straight from the horse’s mouth, an unforgettable experience for any audience.
