Stephen Hutchinson is a former professional British American football player celebrated for his exceptional career as a running back across the UK and Europe. Known for his passion, leadership, and determination, one of his biggest achievement came with his induction into the British American Football Association (BAFA) Hall of Fame in 2021. Today, Stephen is a respected figure in both sport and business, inspiring audiences with lessons drawn from a life spent breaking boundaries and leading from the front.
Stephen’s journey began in London, where his drive for excellence saw him balance study and sport before fully committing to American football in the early 1990s. He started with the London Gators from 1990 to 1992, before joining the London Rockets in 1993. His early years in the British American Football League (BAFL) set the tone for his disciplined approach and his belief in teamwork and perseverance. These foundations led him to the London Olympians; a team he would help guide to national and European success throughout the decade.
Stephen’s professional career truly flourished when he signed with the London Monarchs in 1995, joining the World League of American Football, later known as NFL Europe. He went on to play with the Hamburg Blue Devils in the German Football League in 2000 and later with the Scottish Claymores from 2001 to 2003. His time with the Olympians saw him win the 1994 Eurobowl Championship, where he was named Game MVP, and later secure the 1999 EuroCup Championship and Team MVP honours. After retiring from professional play, Stephen made a comeback as player-coach with the London Blitz in 2007 and 2008, helping the team to another BritBowl Championship, before returning to the London Olympians as Running Backs Coach and Assistant Offensive Coordinator between 2017 and 2019.
Beyond the field, Stephen’s impact continues. In 2014 he co-founded Rosterbase.com, a virtual sports community connecting players, coaches and fans through live chat and social networking. He also co-hosts the ‘Ballaz In Da Middle’ podcast, promoting British American football and mentoring the next generation. Stephen speaks passionately on high-performance, leadership and the lessons learned through sport. His talks inspire audiences to find purpose through teamwork, discipline, and reinvention, making him an engaging choice for organisations seeking authentic, experience-driven insight.
