Sally Phillips is best known as an actress, comedian and television presenter. Having starred across the screens of the BBC, Channel 4 and Sky, Sally has established a reputation as a household name. She first began acting whilst studying at New College in Oxford, joining the comedy group the Oxford Revue. Upon graduating from her studies in Oxford, Sally decided to pursue acting further joining the Théâtre de Complicité to study drama. From that point on, she honed her skills as a performer and has established a highly regarded reputation within the entertainment industry.
Originally performing as a comedian, Sally first took to the stages at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Performing for nine consecutive years, Sally entertained guests with sketches including the likes of Hamlet and Ra-Ra-Rasputin. In 1994, Sally was fortunate to begin acting on TV after she joined the cast of Fist of Fun, Alas Smith and Jones and I’m Alan Partridge. In 1999 Sally appeared in the comedy Hippies, and then went on to co-create and write Smack the Pony. Smack the Pony was highly successful, with it claiming two Emmy Awards and Sally also claimed nomination for Best Female Newcomer at the British Comedy Awards.
Various other roles followed, including cameos in Mean Machine, Born Romantic, Birthday Girl and Rescue Me. In 2001 she was cast as part of the award-winning film trilogy Bridget Jones’ Diary, playing the role of Shazza. The 2000s was a highly successful decade for Sally, entertaining the public in Clare in the Community, Green Wing, Jam & Jerusalem, Skins and the Accidental Farmer. She also made her debut on the hit comedy show Miranda in 2009, playing the character Tilly. Miranda was a critical success, and Sally remained part of the cast until 2015. She also returned to theatre, acting in The Importance of Being Earnest at the Oxford Playhouse in 2005. In 2004 she returned as Shazza in Bridget Jones Diary: The Edge of Reason.
Sally has also appeared across the screens of children’ TV, joining the cast of Justin’s House and Something Special on CBeebies. She has also narrated a series of Super vet for Channel 4 and appeared on the Dave comedy series Dara O’Briain: School of Hard Sums. She was also part of House of Fools, Death in Paradise, Distinguished Ladies and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. In 2016 she returned to the final instalment of Bridget Jones’ Diary in Bridget Jones’ Baby and also presented a BBC documentary titled A World Without Down’s Syndrome?. Most recently, in 2020 she played the role of Gibby in Friday Night Dinner.
