Richard Shotton is the Founder of Astroten, a consultancy that creates marketing strategies based on the tenets of behavioural science. He offers findings from psychology and behavioural science to solve a business challenge, offering businesses simple, practical and creative approaches. As a keynote speaker, Richard is known to speak on the impact of behavioural psychology experiments, consumer psychology and marketing.
Richard possesses a BA in Geography from the University of Oxford and an MSc in Development Studies from SOAS University of London. His first role was as a Communication Manager at Vizeum UK where he worked on accounts for Coca-Cola, Halifax and Peugeot. He has also held roles such as Head of Insight at ZenithOptimedia and Head of Behavioural Science at Manning Gottlieb. Over his 20 year-long career Richard has conducted behavioural psychology experiments for Marketing Week, The Drum, Campaign, Admap and Mediatel.
Richard is the author of “The Choice Factory: 25 Behavioural Biases that Influence What We Buy”, which addresses cognitive bias and how apply them to business challenges. The book was named the Best Sales & Marketing Book at the 2019 Business Book Awards in addition to being voted #1 in the BBH World Cup of Advertising Books. In 2023, Richard published “The Illusion of Choice” which identifies 16.5 most important psychological biases that business leaders and executives should be cognizant of so that they can use them to their advantage.
An Honorary Fellow of the IPA and Associate of the Moller Institute, Richard is also a seasoned keynote speaker. He has been invited to speak at global stages including the Festival of Marketing, Cannes, DMX, Advertising Week and delivered the TEDx “The Strength in Weakness”. His talks usually revolve around applying behavioural science to marketing.
