Sir Richard Moore is a leading expert in national security and intelligence, previously holding one of the most important positions in UK security: Chief of MI6. Also serving in various government roles, he is now the Chair of the Kennedy Memorial Service. With over four decades of intelligence and diplomacy experience, Richard is a keynote speaker who shares his expertise on geopolitics, security and leadership with warmth and wit.
Following his studies at the University of Oxford and as a Kennedy scholar at Harvard, Richard began his MI6 career in 1987 as an intelligence officer, where he served in postings in Vietnam, Turkey, Pakistan and Malaysia. He also worked in London as a Desk Officer for Iran. Continuing in international relations, Richard became the British Ambassador to Turkey for the FCDO. After a brief stint in the Cabinet Office as Deputy National Security Adviser, he worked as the Director-General of Political Affairs in the FCDO, where he led the Iran nuclear negotiations and strategic policy development. During a period of significant geopolitical uncertainty, he became Chief of the Secret Intelligence Service and was the first chief to give live TV and radio interviews. He also modernised MI6 by strengthening collaboration with global intelligence partners and private-sector technology leaders, ensuring the Secret Intelligence Service remains a world-leading intelligence organisation in an increasingly digital world. Today, Richard is the Chair of the Kennedy Memorial Trust, the official British national memorial to the US President John F. Kennedy.
In recognition of his honourable government service, Richard received a CMG in the 2017 New Year's Honours for services to UK-Turkey relations. In the 2023 Birthday Honours, Richard was appointed KCMG for his services to national security and British Foreign Policy. Sharing insights gained during his time in national security, Richard is a Senior Strategist at Sixth Street, Senior Advisor at Teneo's Global Political Risk Advisory and serves on the Global Advisory Board of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
An expert in international and cyber security, Richard is hired as a keynote speaker because of his unique human perspective on shaping the geopolitical environment, navigating security and risk and strategic decision-making. Audiences benefit from his deep expertise in strategic competition and gain valuable insights into his work at the intersection of government, technology and global markets.
