Winning his first amateur trophy in 1985, the Brabazon Trophy, he later went on to represent Britain and Ireland in the Walker Cup in 1985. Evidently a skilled competitor, Baker made the decision to turn professional a year after the Walker Cup, and thus began his impressive career.
