With an illustrious career at NASA, Omar is currently the Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer at NASA Goddard Space Flight Centre. With an impressive educational foundation, including two Master degrees in Engineering and a Ph.D in Mechanical Engineering from the University of South Carolina, Omar has dedicated his career to artificial intelligence and innovation. He began his career in 1997 as a Senior Engineer at the Johnson Space Centre before becoming a NASA Research Scientist. Omar quickly rose through the ranks taking on roles like Deputy Chief Scientist before becoming NASA Chief Innovation Officer where he led a team to explore innovative solutions to present and future problems.
In recent years, Omar has turned his expertise more directly to the application of AI. In 2022 he became the NASA IT Strategy Lead and then the following year took on the role as NASA Chief Advisor for Artificial Intelligence and Innovation, where he is responsible for spearheading NASA’s AI strategy and integrating AI solutions to support NASA’s missions. Omar has also authored two books on AI including “BetweenBrains: Taking Back our AI Future”, an in depth look at AI and its impact on the present and the near future.
