Monty Merchie is an ambitious UK paraclimber, former hotelier, musician and model, currently training to qualify for Team GB in lead climbing. Monty is an incredible motivational speaker who draws from his first-hand experience in sports, business and advocacy to inspire a range of audiences.
Monty was born with a congenital malformation in the bones of his left leg and had undergone numerous operations during his childhood. At 16, he had his leg amputated and was fitted with a prosthetic leg. Not letting this obstacle stop him, he took on a formidable 250km ride around France and started learning to snowboard shortly afterwards. With various experience in hospitality growing up, Monty worked as a Manager of The Wensleydale Hotel in North Yorkshire for four years. Adding to his diverse portfolio, he also produces original electronic music under the name Merchie.
With his sights set on representing Great Britain at the Paralympics in lead climbing, Monty has taken part in multiple climbing competitions and events, including the UK Paraclimbing Collective Competition at Harrowall and the City Bloc Leeds Summer & Winter League Finals. Most recently, he won a bronze medal at his first national competition, the 2025 British Paraclimbing Championships. In his modelling career, Monty has featured as a model in campaigns for Primark, Tommy Hilfiger and Schuh. He was also included in the Luxiders magazine ‘Embracing Uniqueness’ editorial, speaking on removing the taboo of disabilities, self-love and the importance of genuine inclusivity.
