Michal Meidan

Michal Meidan is a leading expert in Chinese energy policy and geopolitics, renowned for her ability to analyse and interpret the intricate dynamics of China’s energy sector. She is currently the Director of the China Energy Programme at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies (OIES), a role she has held since July 2019. Michal’s career is built on a solid academic foundation, which includes a PhD in Political Science and East Asian Studies from Sciences Po, Paris. She also holds a Master's degree in East Asian Studies/Political Science from the Institut national des langues et civilisations orientales (Inalco) in Paris. Michal began her professional journey as a Research Assistant and later became the Editor of the monthly publication China Analysis, where she provided critical insights into China’s energy and foreign policy. Before joining OIES, she was the Vice President of Research at Energy Aspects from 2016 to 2019, where she led the analysis of Asian energy markets and geopolitics, with a particular focus on China. Additionally, Michal served as Director of China Matters between 2014 and 2016, offering independent research and strategic advice on China’s energy sector to corporate, financial, and government clients. Her time as a Senior Analyst at Eurasia Group (2010–2014) involved in-depth assessments of China’s domestic oil and gas industry, pricing policies, and outbound investments.
