The leader behind the Australian team that took their fifth victory at the Cricket World Cup, Michael Clarke is a former professional cricketer turned commentator and after dinner speaker. As a 17-year-old, Clarke made his first-class debut for New South Wales in a match against the touring Indian team in 1999. After completing a scholarship with the Australian Cricket Academy, he moved to play for Ramsbottom Cricket Club in 2002 before becoming the first Test cricketer to score centuries on both their home and away debuts.
Throughout his prolific career, Michael made 115 Test and almost 250 ODI appearances with an ODI batting score of 130 being his highest. Nominated the Australian Man of the Series by England director Andy Flower in the 2009 Ashes Series and the only Test batsman to have reached four double centuries in a year, Michael has established himself as one of the most iconic names in cricket. At the pinnacle of his work, Clarke was appointed as the captain of the Twenty20 Australian team in 2009. Under his leadership, the team managed to defeat rivals England, in the 2013-14 Ashes series and also gain number one Test ranking from South Africa in 2014.
He amassed multiple awards during this time including the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy, Cricketer of the Year and Test Cricketer of the Year in 2013. He also secured Wisden Leading Cricketer in the World and Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack before being named the captain of World Test XI and ODI XI by the ICC. Following on from his retirement after Australia’s victory at the 2015 Cricket World Cup, Michael Clarke has gone onto become a commentator for Channel Nine’s commentary team and regularly offers his analysis to various channels.
