One of the most successful New Zealand professional golfers, Michael Campbell is best known for winning the 2005 U.S, Open and the HSBC World Match Play Championship in the same year. This saw him win the richest prize in golf, a staggering £1,000,000. Michael turned professional in 1993 and eventually established himself as a solid performer by 2000 when he finished fourth on the European Tour Order of Merit and in the top ten in 2002. However Michael only made a real name for himself following the 2005 U.S Open where he successfully sunk a six foot birdie putt on the last hole and secured his place in the U.S Open.
Michael's major competition was Tiger Woods who was undone by bogeys on the 16th and 17th holes resulting in Michael winning with an even par 280. Following in Bob Charles footsteps Michael became the second New Zealander to ever win a major and the first winner, except Steve Jones in 1996 to have entered the US Open via sectional qualifying. Later on into 2005 Michael won the HSBC World Match Play Championship at Wentworth.
Defeating Retief Goosen in the semi-final and then Paul McGinley in the final resulting in him winning the richest prize in golf. This victory named him the fourth golfer to win both the U.S. Open and the World Match Play titles in the same year and placed him top of the European Order of Merit. Michael continued to perform around the world before retiring in 2015, now he is a popular golf speaker on the after dinner speaking circuit.
He's also passionate about the environment which has led to him co-founding the Project Litefoot Trust which helps New Zealand community sports clubs reduce their environmental impact while also saving money for sport. Michael regularly coaches and passes on his knowledge at a golfing academy he runs in Spain. The highly sought after golf speaker can offer a huge insight into the golfing industry and he is extremely passionate about passing on his expertise. He entertains his audiences with stories of his career and playing in some of the most high pressured situations with the best golfers in the world.
