Matt Richards

Matt Richards MBE is a talented swimmer, renowned for his abilities in the 100m and 200m Freestyle, recently making headlines after he played a pivotal role in Team GB claiming Gold in the 4x200m Freestyle at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Having also claimed an individual Olympic Gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games and the title of World Champion in the 200m at the 2023 World Championships, Matt is an inspirational elite sportsman who is frequently sought to share his journey to elite sporting success at events across the globe. 

In his early career, Matt represented Wales, breaking both the 100m and 200m Freestyle Welsh Records. He later claimed the title of Junior Champion in the 100m Freestyle at the 2019 European Junior Championships, followed by double Silver at the 2020 LC World Championships in 2021. Qualifying to represent Team GB at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, Matt joined James Guy, Duncan Scott and Tom Dean in the 4x200m Freestyle, claiming the Gold and Britain’s first Gold in the 4x200m Freestyle since 1908. Further success followed, claiming double World Champion titles at the 2023 World Championships, and Double Gold at the 2023 Aquatics GB Swimming Championships – the latter of which earned Matt qualification to represent Team GB at the 2024 Olympic Games.

At the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, Matt claimed Silver in the 200m Freestyle, with his biggest success taking place in the 4x200m Freestyle event. Matt, James, Tom and Duncan returned as the same quartet of the 2020 Olympic Games to defend their title, claiming Gold in the 4x200m Freestyle once more – making history as the first British team to have defended an Olympic relay title in swimming or athletics. His true dedication to swimming has earned him a strong following, and the appointment of MBE in the 2022 New Year Honours for Services to Swimming.
