Malcolm Brown is an Olympic speaker and Performance Coach. He is based at the Leeds Triathlon Centre, he’s coached the Olympic medal-winning Brownlee brothers and Jack Maitland since their teen years. A former endurance running coach for UK Athletics, he has coached athletes to winning international gold medals at Commonwealth, European, World and Olympic levels. He was also the British Triathlon’s Olympic Performance Manager for the London 2012 Olympic Games. He was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours 2013 for his services to Triathlon and sport. He started his career with a degree in Teaching Physical Education and English. Malcolm has worked at four different universities in both academic and departmental roles.
During his time at Leeds Met he was asked if he would assist two young brothers to improve their running speed, they were Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee. The duo has worked with him ever since and, with Malcolm’s commitment and support they secured a place in British sporting history, winning gold and bronze in the triathlon at the 2012 Olympic Games. Malcolm is very knowledgeable around the Olympic subject, including the highs and lows of developing young athletes.
Malcolm is a co-founder of the Leeds Triathlon Centre, which boasts the likes of the Brownlee Brothers, Vicky Holland and Non Stafford. Being a co-founder of the centre demanded a great deal of commitment and accountability from Malcolm. The athletes were expected to win medals, so there were many hours that needed to be committed to meetings outside of coaching to ensure they had the right planning for training. Before Malcolm became interested in coaching the triathlon he spent 25 years coaching within the field of endurance running, coaching with British athletics. Malcolm was particularly interested in the endurance of athletes in triathlons. He believed that there was room for improvement in every run, and that at the end of the day it was a survival test to see who could reach the end of the race. He aimed to increase the resilience of the athletes that he coached with the end goal of victory and injury prevention.
