The daughter of Nelson Mandela, Makaziwe Mandela is following in her father’s footsteps as a social and political justice advocate. From campaigning to business advisory, Makaziwe is fronting the next generation of progressive change driven to bring awareness to issues affecting African communities. An inspiration to all she meets, Makaziwe not only shares passionate talks on the topics she advocates for, but also offers implementable strategies to corporate clients to improve education on such themes as health, female empowerment, and economic deprivation.
Working extensively in the development sector, Makaziwe previously held senior roles at the Development Bank of Southern Africa and the Industrial Development Group, both in which she advised on futureproofed strategies for individual and business success. As a renowned thought leader, Makaziwe has sat on a number of boards including Rand Water Services, Envirosev and Myriad Medical a testament to her insights and impact across a range of sectors. Currently, Makaziwe sits on the Board for Nestle SA.
Inspired by her father’s work, Makaziwe pursued a career in equality, studying a degree in Social Work at Fort Hare University, before completing her further qualifications in sociology. Gaining international recognition for her commitment to driving social justice, Makaziwe was honoured with the Fulbright Distinguished Fellowship Award allowing her to study at the University of Massachusetts for an anthropology doctorate, which she has utilised to teach around the world on her subject.
Currently, Makaziwe dedicates much of her time to continuing the legacy of the House of Mandela Family Foundation as the Director. Through this venture and the House of Mandela of which she founded, Makaziwe has a platform to promote her message of equality. A champion of female empowerment, Makaziwe supports the women’s investment group, Nozala and is a consultant for Self-Empowerment International, aiming to encourage personal progression and confidence.
As a speaker, Makaziwe expands on her career and essential topics for both organisations and corporate clients including service leadership, health and welfare, social justice and empowering marginalised groups.
