Leo Cullen is an accomplished rugby leadership speaker, former Ireland international and Head Coach of Leinster Rugby, recognised for guiding one of Europe’s most successful teams through sustained periods of elite performance. His greatest achievement came in 2018, when he became the first person to win Europe’s leading club rugby trophy as both a player and a head coach. Drawing on decades spent competing, captaining and coaching at the highest level, Leo offers audiences a clear and credible perspective on leadership, culture, resilience and performance under pressure. His speaking style is calm, thoughtful and practical, giving business leaders and teams valuable lessons from the demanding world of professional sport.
Leo’s rugby journey began at Blackrock College, where he developed his leadership skills and won consecutive Leinster Schools Senior Cup titles in 1995 and 1996. Alongside his rugby development, Leo studied at University College Dublin and graduated with a BA in Economics in 1999. He also represented Ireland at schools, Under 19, Under 21 and ‘A’ level, captaining several of those sides before making his senior international debut against New Zealand in Auckland in 2002. In 2005, Leo joined Leicester Tigers, where he made 56 appearances, captained the side on 15 occasions and helped the club win the Guinness Premiership and EDF Energy Cup in 2007. The move gave him experience of a different high-performance environment and strengthened his understanding of how culture, standards and leadership styles influence results.
After returning to Leinster in 2007, Leo was appointed Leinster Rugby Captain in 2008 and became central to the province’s most successful era. He captained Leinster to European Cup victories in 2009, 2011 and 2012, becoming the first player to lead a team to three titles in the competition. He also earned 32 senior caps for Ireland and became the 100th player to captain Ireland at Test level in 2011. After retiring in 2014, Leo joined Leinster’s coaching staff as Forwards Coach before being appointed Head Coach in 2015. Under his leadership, Leinster won the European Rugby Champions Cup in 2018, six domestic league championships and four Irish Shields. He was named United Rugby Championship Coach of the Year in 2018 and 2022, received the URC Chairman’s Award in 2014 and earned the UCD Alumni Award in Sport in 2021. Leo will leave his role at the conclusion of the 2026/27 season, completing 12 years as Leinster Head Coach.
Organisations should hire Leo because his experience reaches far beyond match results and trophies. He understands how to create environments where talented individuals work towards a shared goal, how to maintain trust during periods of pressure and how leaders can protect standards while adapting to change. His keynote topics include leadership, building high-performing teams, creating a winning culture, resilience, performance under pressure, and succession planning. Leo’s career provides practical examples of preparation, decision-making and collective responsibility, making him an excellent choice for corporate conferences, leadership events, management meetings and team development programmes.
