Lee Spencer BEM is an inspirational military veteran, who has never let adversity stop him from achieving his goals in life. Having lost his right leg below the knee, Lee’s story is one of courage, determination, overcoming adversity and leadership that will leave event guests enthralled. Now hired as a motivational speaker for a range of corporate events, Lee is booked to share his story of how he became a three-times Guinness World Record holder for becoming the World’s first disabled person to row from Europe to South America solo and unsupported.
Growing up in very difficult circumstances, living in a home that was dominated by alcoholism and violence, Lee has long had to overcome adversity. Despite the troubles of his childhood, Lee turned negative into positive, and joined The Royal Marines in 1992. Initially told that he was “not what they were looking for”, Lee proved his worth as a soldier – completing three operational tours of Northern Ireland and Iraq. Having led a section of the first wave in the assault of Al Faw Peninsula, Lee initially served as a Troop Sergeant, before qualifying for working within the Human Intelligence sphere of the forces and performing three tours of Afghanistan covert undercover.
Having served for 24 years in the Royal Marines, Lee was struck by adversity in 2014. Whilst helping people who had been involved in a crash on the M3 in Surrey, Lee was hit by an engine block, which left his leg severed by the impact. Using the skills he learned as a member of the Royal Marines, Lee incredibly remained conscious during the ordeal and instructed bystanders to tie a tourniquet to save his life. Despite such adversity, Lee has gone on to achieve incredible – including multiple Guinness World Records! His first record was achieved when he was part of the Guinness World Record Row2Recovery team that rowed across the Atlantic from La Gomera to Antigua, the first physically disabled crew to do so. He later achieved three more Guinness World Records in 2019, when he rowed from Europe to South America solo and unsupported – also breaking the able-bodied record by a staggering 36 days!
With his next mission to complete The Triathlon of Great Britain, Lee Spencer is a truly honourable man, whose determination was honoured by becoming the recipient of the British Empire Medal. With a truly incredible story to share, Lee is now highly sought after as a keynote and motivational speaker for corporate events. Hired to share anecdotes of his life story, Lee covers everything from courage and determination to overcoming adversity and leadership in his keynote speeches. A seasoned speaker, Lee was asked to share his story with the England Men’s Football Team, praised by Gareth Southgate for his “brilliant and inspirational stories”. When looking for a speaker guaranteed to move audiences of all kinds, make Lee Spencer one of your first choice.
