Julie Miller is a transgender woman and former Army Officer with a distinguished 25-year military career. Today, she is a passionate advocate for the trans community and a prominent figure in what has become known as the 'trans culture wars'. Julie’s journey has not been an easy one. Like many trans people, she spent years concealing her identity behind a mask of conventional masculinity, driven by a fear of prejudice, abuse and societal rejection. It wasn’t until the mental toll became too heavy — with serious impacts on her wellbeing, including suicidal ideation — that she made the courageous decision to live openly as a gender fluid trans woman.
Now, Julie dedicates her life to empowering and educating others, offering a unique and engaging perspective on transgender issues. Her signature transgender awareness presentations are known for their flamboyant fusion of academic rigour and performance. Julie doesn’t just teach audiences how to be inclusive — she explains why trans people deserve understanding and respect. Drawing on academic literature and scientific research, she explores the four key pillars that underpin the legitimacy of trans lives in modern liberal democracies: history, science, culture and law. With humour, emotional candour and theatrical flair, she delivers compelling presentations that resonate even with those unfamiliar or uncomfortable with the topic.
Julie’s credentials are both extensive and impressive. She served for three years as the Dorset Manager for transgender charity Beyond Reflections, where she established and led a successful support group for individuals navigating gender transition. She has worked as a transgender awareness speaker and trainer across a wide range of sectors, including schools, universities, hospitals, prisons, police forces, local councils and private companies. Julie is also a consultant for Make UK, former governor at Hampshire Hospitals Foundation Trust, and a transgender support facilitator in a sex offenders’ prison, where the work is especially complex and sensitive. In addition, she has supported the Crown Prosecution Service with advice on transgender hate crime processes and serves as an NHS role player, portraying trans patients to help healthcare professionals improve their care delivery.
Above all, Julie is driven by a belief in education, empathy, and the pursuit of good mental health — which she calls “the Holy Grail” of trans existence. Her mission is to dismantle misinformation, build bridges of understanding, and ensure that every trans person has the opportunity to live with dignity, authenticity and pride.
