Julian Birkinshaw has enjoyed a successful career in academia, having spent almost two decades as a member of the Faculty of the London Business School. Currently the Professor of Strategy & Entrepreneurship at the London Business School, Julian is a widely recognised expert on innovation, entrepreneurship and renewal. After graduating with a BSc from the University of Durham and an MBA and PhD in Business from the Richard Ivey School of Business, Julian began his esteemed career in academia at the London Business School in 1999. Since 1999, Julian has been a prominent member of the Faculty, and he is currently the Deputy Dean of the London Business School. Also the Director of the Deloitte Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Julian is considered a preeminent authority on innovation, entrepreneurship and management. With a unique insight into academia and business, Julian has also worked with Gary Hamel as the Co-Founder of the Management Innovation Lab (MLab), accelerating the evolution of management.
Outside of academia, Julian acts as a Fellow of the British Academy, the Academy of International Business, the US Academy of Management and the Academy of Social Scientists. He is also frequently sought-after to appear on a variety of national and international media outlets, such as CNN and the BBC, along with publishing articles in The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg Business Week, The Economist, The Times and The Huffington Post. In recognition of his expertise, Julian has also been awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the Stockholm School of Economics and the Copenhagen Business School. In 2019, he was also recognised at 45th on Thinkers50s Top Global Management Thinkers. Alongside working in academia, Julian has also committed time to writing, having published 15 books and countless articles in the Academy of Management Journal, the Harvard Business Review, the Strategic Management Journal and the Sloan Management Review.
