After finding fame on the sixth series of The X Factor, Joe McElderry has become an icon within the music and theatre industry. An actor, singer-songwriter and media personality, McElderry has also gone onto win the second series of Popstar To Operastar and dive into the opera sector of the music industry. In 2007, Joe auditioned for the fifth series of ITV reality show The X Factor. He became successful and managed to reach the Bootcamp stages of the competition before withdrawing himself due to his young age. He took the next two years to prepare himself before returning to our screens in 2009 to audition with an incredible rendition of Luther Vandross’s Dance with My Father. He blew the judges away with his vocals each week and sailed his way through the competition to eventually reach the live finals. He was announced as the winner of the show renowned for kickstarting a highly successful music career and was no anomaly.
Shortly after the final, Joe released a cover of The Climb by Miley Cyrus as his winners single. He sold over 100,000 copies only on the first day, topping both the UK and Ireland Singles Charts which lead to the launch of his debut album Wide Awake in 2010. McElderry began attending various events all over the UK to share his musical talent with his fans, it was when he was performing in Brighton for National Student Pride that he was scouted yet again by the ITV. They invited him to join the cast of the second series of Popstar to Opera Star where he was coached by the likes of Katherine Jenkins to win the series with 77.1% of the final public vote.
Having kickstarted a new career as an opera singer, McElderry released his second album entitled Classic which was certified gold within ten days of its release. He also started performing in theatrical performances including Cinderella, The Who’s Tommy and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. Due to the success of its initial release, McElderry also released a festive take on his second album called Christmas Classic Throughout his 10-year career, Joe McElderry has displayed a wide range of performance styles. This has led to him gaining a huge fan base, all of different age, interest and music preference. He is a public figure so instantly recognisable that he is guaranteed to impress any audience that he approaches as an after-dinner speaker.
