Gordon Herbert

Gordon Herbert is the current head coach of FC Bayern Munich in the Basketball Bundesliga and EuroLeague, having taken over the role in July 2024. A highly accomplished basketball coach and former player, he is widely regarded as one of the most respected figures in international basketball. As the head coach of the German national team (2021–2024), Gordon made history by leading them to their first-ever FIBA World Cup championship in 2023, cementing his legacy in the sport. With over 30 years of coaching experience, he has worked with teams across Germany, France, Finland, Austria, and the NBA, demonstrating a deep understanding of leadership, teamwork, and high-performance culture. Before stepping into coaching, he had a successful playing career, competing professionally in Europe and representing Canada at the 1984 Summer Olympics (4th place) and the 1986 FIBA World Championship.

Gordon’s basketball journey began in North America, where he played college basketball at North Idaho College before transferring to the University of Idaho. As a key forward, he helped the team reach the NCAA Sweet Sixteen in 1982 and earned All-Big Sky honours. After college, he embarked on a 12-season professional playing career in Finland, where he built a reputation as a skilled and intelligent player. Transitioning to coaching in 1994, he quickly rose through the European ranks, establishing himself as a top-tier coach. His early coaching success included leading Frankfurt Skyliners to a Basketball Bundesliga title in 2004, winning the French Cup with Pau-Orthez in 2007, and securing the Finnish Cup with Espoon Honka in 2009. He further added to his accolades by guiding Frankfurt to victory in the 2016 FIBA Europe Cup.

As a coach, Gordon is known for his ability to develop winning teams and implement a disciplined, structured approach to the game. His tenure with the German national team was particularly remarkable, as he led them to a bronze medal at the 2022 European Championships before guiding them to a historic gold medal at the 2023 FIBA World Cup. For his exceptional leadership, he was named Coach of the Year in Germany in 2023. His coaching expertise also extended to the NBA, where he worked as an assistant coach for the Toronto Raptors, further broadening his experience at the highest levels of the sport. After concluding his tenure with the German national team following the 2024 Summer Olympics, he took over as head coach of FC Bayern Munich, where he is focused on achieving success in both domestic and international competitions.
