Garrett McNamara is a world-famous big wave surfer, environmental advocate and inspiring keynote speaker, best known for setting the Guinness World Record for the largest wave ever surfed. Garrett’s early life was far from conventional. Born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, he experienced a turbulent childhood that saw him move between the US and Central America. Eventually settling in Hawaii’s North Shore at the age of 11, he was introduced to surfing by his younger brother. The waves became Garrett’s sanctuary. By 17, he had already placed in theTriple Crown of Surfing, a prestigious competition that launched his competitive surfing career. Though initially overshadowed by his brother, Garrett’s relentless pursuit of big wave mastery soon set him apart, especially as tow-in surfing began to revolutionise the sport in the early 2000s.

A defining moment came in 2002 when Garrett and tow-in partner Rodrigo Resende won the Tow Surfing World Cup at Jaws, claiming the $70,000 prize. From there, he continued to make headlines, riding waves in extreme conditions around the globe. In 2011, he made history by surfing a 78-foot wave in Nazaré, earning a Guinness World Record, which he surpassed in 2013 with a wave estimated at 100 feet. In addition to being an eight-time Guinness World Record holder, he is the only foreign recipient of the Portuguese Navy’s Medalha Naval de Vasco da Gama. Garrett also gained acclaim for his daring expedition to surf waves formed by calving glaciers in Alaska, a feat never achieved before or since.
