Fergus Slattery is best known for being a former rugby union player, representing his country of Ireland. Having a love for rugby since a young age, Fergus has always had the drive of passion behind him in the sport. Throughout his career Fergus has celebrated a number of victories, being capped an impressive 61 times with 18 of those caps being as a captain.
Founding his love for rugby at a young age, Fergus began to play rugby at Blackrock College. After playing and training with this team for a while, Fergus progressed to senior rugby playing for University College Dublin rugby club. In 1970 Fergus made his big break in the rugby world, being called up to the Ireland team. A year later in 1971 Fergus joined the British and Irish Lions, playing in their team that toured New Zealand.
As well as playing for the British and Irish Lions, Fergus has also spent time playing for the Barbarians. His most significant game that he played for the Barbarians was the match against the All Blacks in Cardiff. In 1974, Fergus was selected once more to join the British and Irish Lions on another of their tours. During this tour, he played in all four tests, with the privilege of captaining two provincial matches.
In 1979 Fergus once again had the privilege of coaching, being the coach of the most successful Irish touring side ever. He coached this team to secure the victory in seven of the eight Australian matches, including the tests in Brisbane and Sydney. As well as those victories, Fergus is also known for being part of the Irish Triple Crown winning team. Fergus made his last appearance in Dublin in a game against England, which his team won 25-15.
Due to his commitment and passion for rugby, in 2007 Fergus was entered into the Rugby Hall of Fame. Fergus has been described as an intense and professional player who wouldn’t look out of place in the modern era of rugby. On his retirement, he gained the title of the most capped flanker of all time with his 61 caps. Now retired Fergus is able to provide guests of corporate events with inspiring and entertaining after-dinner tales.
